Founded in Detroit in 1959 by Berry Gordy Jr., Motown was a successful African American-owned business that helped integrate race into popular music. The label's name is a combination of the words "motor" and "town", a reference to Detroit's role as a major motor vehicle producer. Motown's artists included Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, and Marvin Gaye. Motown has now continued to be the innovators in black music with popular artists like Lil Baby, Quavo, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Lil Yachty, JT, Offset & many more.
