It looks like the Liberals and Conservatives are deadlocked as they campaign with less than a week left to go before the Canadian federal election.
A new poll conducted by Leger in collaboration with The Canadian Press has Justin Trudeau’s Liberals and Erin O’Toole’s Conservatives tied with 32 percent of decided votes. The NDP are closely behind in third place with 20 percent.
Approximately one-fifth of people surveyed in the online poll reported that if the race was tight between the two parties, it could likely convince them to switch their vote to the Liberals. Alternatively, about one in 10 said they would potentially switch to the Conservatives.
Two weeks ago, a similar poll had the Conservatives pulling ahead with 34 percent compared with 30 percent for the Liberals. The NDP had 24 percent.
Both Trudeau and O’Toole continue to campaign ahead of election day on September 20. Yesterday, Erin O’Toole remarked that, “Every Canadian has met a Justin Trudeau in their lives privileged, entitled and always looking out for number one.”
“He was looking out for number one when he called this expensive and unnecessary election in the middle of a pandemic,” he said.
Justin Trudeau responded several hours later from Vancouver to announce that if re-elected, the Liberals would make it a criminal offence to obstruct access to buildings that prodivde health services, such as hospitals.
He also touched on vaccine mandates: “What we need is leadership that will be unequivocal that Canadians need to get vaccinated, not leadership like Mr. O’Toole who pretends that testing is equivalent to vaccination,” he said. “Just ask someone in a ventilator in the ICU how testing helped them.”
