Living in the mild climate of North Central Florida has its numerous advantages – no snow, no ice, not too many subfreezing temps. . . . . However, if you are a homeowner or gardener in this area everything just keeps on growing and growing, which needs your TLC and daily or weekly efforts to keep in shape. My lawn mowing season starts in mid-February and continues through October. Yuk! So, I was anxious to test this complimentary new Hyper Tough 20” Lawn Mower as a trimming, edging, and mower to get into places my garden tractor mower cannot go.
What's Included In The Box? Easy to assemble Hyper Tough Lawn Mower – 'Quick start Guide' – Lawn Mower 'Operator's Manual' – Briggs and Stratton 'Operator's Manual' – 15.5 oz bottle of SAE 30 Engine Oil.
When the Hyper Tough mower was delivered it took approximately 15 minutes to unbox, assemble (no tools required), and ready for fuel and oil using the included 'Quick Start Guide'. After reading the included 'Operator's Manual' and Briggs and Stratton 'Operator's Manual' I was ready to go.
Because of the long duration of my mowing season and the very warm temperatures here, especially in the Summer, I used 15w-50 Synthetic Oil, as recommended. Since this oil comes in 32 oz size and the B & S engine, oil capacity is 15 oz, this gives me two oil changes throughout my long mowing season. The Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine is a 300 Series, 4-Cycle, OHV, Fixed Accelerator Speed Engine, 125cc, with 4.5 Ft-lbs. Gross Torque, which relates to an approximate, 4 HP rating. No mixing of oil and fuel ratios is required by this mower. WooHoo! Since YOU push this 20 “ mower a bigger HP engine isn't warranted for extra accessories. The over head valve (OHV) relates to longer engine life, and the fixed engine speed is optimized to perform the mowing tasks this mower was designed for. If you need a mower to cut approximately a small lawn (quarter acre) or 10,000 sq. ft. of trimming and edging, like I do, this is the mower you want. It is efficient on fuel and exceptionally easy to maintain.
Over the last two weeks we have cut and trimmed approximately 10,000 sq. ft. of grass each time in places my larger garden tractor mower could not maneuver. It has done a great job for us. On the second cutting, wifeypoo wanted to go outside and get some exercise pushing this mower around our house. Pics are attached. She was impressed how easy it was to push and maneuver around our landscaping. If only I could get her to do this in the middle of July when it is 98 degrees and 100% humidity? Dream on . . . .
This Hyper Tough mower is easy to start (no choke control) – Press the Primer Button three times and Pull the Starter Cord - And is easy to stop, just release the 'Operator Presence Control Bar'.
My soil here is mostly sandy, and, extremely dusty when dry. So, I clean the washable air filter each time after use. I will have to replace this filter at least two or more times a year. So, to protect the bottom of my Hyper Tough mower I have sprayed two coats of marine undercoat protection to keep the sand, which is uplifted from the mower blade to keep from sandblasting the metal housing away. TIP: You may wish to consider this if your soil is sandy, gravely, or consists of materials, which will wear your mower's metal housing body. Just tape the metal bolts before you spray and remove the blade.
Always check the oil level, cleanliness of your air filter, and use fresh fuel – add fuel stabilizer if you are going to leave this lawn mower idle for more then two weeks – when using fuel stabilizer run it through your motor for approximately ten minutes to be effective on the seals and gaskets.
The manufacturer is listed as Husqvarna, which is a quality producer of outdoor, garden, and
forestry equipment, and it is made in the good ole' USA. It carries a two year warranty on the B & S engine. For its price-point and quality this is a great bargain.
I highly recommend this Hyper Tough lawn mower if you have a small lot to cut (¼ acre) or need effective trimming and edging that your lawn or garden tractor cannot accomplish. It is well-built, inexpensive, and easy to maintain.
